How did you keep in touch before cell phones arrived?

Over the last decade or so, life has changed dramatically. Many things which simply did not exist when I was a young child are quiet common place today. I guess one of the technological wonders which have made our life easier, better and accomplish many things much faster is the cell phone. But nowadays, cell phones gave communication the added factor of mobility. We can now make and receive calls while on the go. It seems like communication is now easier and much faster.

I remember what it was like to be a teenager many years before everyone had mobile phones. I used to hunt around either for a pay phone if I was outside or call up the other party using the landline either at home or one of the neighbors phone. Whenever I wanted to call my friend, I would call his home phone. Sometimes my buddy would pick up the phone and I would discuss the urgent matter with him (For example: when’s the next party and where is it happening? Etc lol). At other times his parents would pick up the phone and I ended up speaking with them first and they would ask me how I've been, how my parent's are, what am I doing these days, etc. I believe mobile phones are destroying the art of communication as well as the right manners and good old fashioned talking style. These days it's like people are too scared to talk to anyone and they want to get it over with as soon as they start it.

I remember that people had a life before cell phones made such an impact on people life. I was not tied down to the phone and neither was I so much influenced by it as the kids are these days. I used the landline phone only when really necessary and preferred to visit my buddies instead. Sure, these cell phones do come in handy and play a vital role when you are stuck on a road and need help or if you want to keep in touch with your elderly parents or young children.

I say ditch your mobile and start using your home phone more. If you're out? Use a public phone! Start carrying a phone book around with you with everyone's numbers in!
